Nobody knows how we fell apart
After countless vows of togetherness
Having averred to overlook faults
Of one another in perfect charity.
I was willing and so were you
To bury the past and start anew
But the ghost of intolerance
Exhumed the dead wrong each time.
I can no longer say I believe in you,
Nor can you; life is to be endured,
Even without a soul mate
Or friend to the heart come what may.
We cannot bear the stress of hate.
We are all worlds on our own
Closed to others or unknown
Till a calamity shakes us forth
And unlocks the floodgates of privacy,
Destroying the bulwarks of self – worth,
Making us human altogether
And friends to each other evermore.
